Impact on Georgia
In 1991, Georgia had recently passed the largest tax increase in its history. Charter schools and school report cards did not exist. Privatization of government services and market-based environmental reforms were controversial ideas and rare occurrences. True reform in welfare seemed impossible.
Today, the Foundation’s work on privatization is credited with prodding state government to turn to the private sector to cut costs and improve services – Georgia is now among the leaders in privatization. Thanks to the atmosphere we have helped to create, tax cuts are no longer a question of “if” but of “how much.”
Thousands of Georgia families have moved off the welfare roles and in to the workforce at a rate faster than that of most other states thanks to the welfare reforms we helped write that were among the toughest in the nation. We have been effective in suggesting ways to harness the free market to improve areas such as urban transportation and air quality. Our Public School Report Card has become an influential catalyst for change – and a resource for teachers and parents. Georgia is one of the leaders in teh nation in giving parents public and private options for their children's education.
